Monument To The Boll Weevil

There is one monument in the world erected for a bug.
In Enterprise, in the state of Alabama in the US there is a monument to the Boll Weevil.

This insect was originally from Mexico and attacks cotton crops, eating the buds and making the crop worthless. In around 1915 it moved north and devastated the cotton crops of Alabama.

A local, H M Sessions, saw the problem and decided the future may be in other crops. He tried peanuts and the agricultural experiment was a wonderful success.

From then on the farmers of Enterprise diversified their crops and built successful futures. Businessman Bon Flemming decided to build a monument to the Boll Weevil as "a tribute to how something disastrous can be a catalyst for change".

It is a great story and an example that tough and challenging times can actually be a blessing. You just need the eyes to see and the courage to follow some new opportunities that God is opening up for you.
